SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Tonight, the Center for World Music will present the final concert of this year's concerts at the Mingei and La Jolla Community Center. Accomplished composer, performer, and scholar Münir Beken will perform classical Turkish music on the fretless string instrument known as an ud which is considered to be the ultimate Arab and Middle Eastern musical instrument. The San Diego County Fair continues at the Racetrack in Del Mar – Americana at its most exhuberant!
Friday (today), the German film Alle Reden Übers Wetter (Talking About the Weather) will be shown at the Digital Gym. They will have repeat screenings the following Sunday and the Wednesday after that. The play The Color Purple will open at New Village Arts Theatre in Carlsbad. Performances will continue through to the 3rd week in July. At the La Jolla Community Center, the Center for World Music will present the Turkish composer, performer, and scholar Münir Beken, who "will take you on a musical journey through the unique sounds of the Turkish ud." Don't forget to use your discount code! Zambian group W.I.T.C.H. will perform at the Belly Up. At the Sherman Heights Community Center there will be a Noche de Cumbia fundraising event. The Soul Rebels and Seun Kuti will perform at Music Box.
Saturday, the House of Puerto Rico will hold their annual Lawn Program at the International Cottages in Balboa Park. The annual AXIS Juneteenth event will also take place in Balboa Park. The Cooper Family Foundation Juneteenth Celebration will take place at Memorial Park on Ocean View Blvd. The Kinfolk Fest Juneteenth Celebration will take place at Waterfront Park. Mujeres Brewhouse (a lovely place) will host their 4th Anniversary Fundraiser benefiting Media Arts Center San Diego who produce the fabulous San Diego Latino Film Festival and who are home to the Digital Gym. There will be yet another Juneteenth Celebration at the Quartyard. The Mexican band Edición Especial will perform at the Civic Center downtown. At the Balboa Library, C'est L'Amour: The Music of Paris will feature Adrienne Nims and Mark Danisovszky for a program of French music. Rumble en Aztlán II at Aztlán Libre will feature live music, live graffiti artists, food, and more.
Sunday, the House of Israel will present their annual Lawn Program. There will be a Young Native Playwrights Festival at Handlery Hotel.
Monday, Mestizaje: Interwoven Identities between Mexico, the Philippines and Spain at the Mingei will be a preview sampler of a new collaboration between DanzArts and PASACAT Dance Companies. There will be a Jewish Short Play Festival at the JCC. Songs of the East at the Villa Montezuma Museum will present a an operatice musical journey through India, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Persia, Turkey, China, and Japan.
Wednesday, the Worldbeat center will host their 2nd Annual Harriet Tubman Freedom Bird Walk.
Next Thursday, popular Mexican singer José Madero will perform at the House of Blues. Jamaican reggae fusion band Third World will be at the Belly Up.
Next Friday, the remarkable guitarist Fred Benedetti will perform Music from Spain and South America at the La Jolla Community Center. You can celebrate International Make Music Day at at Liberty Station. Mexican pop group Reik will perform at Pechanga Arena. At the San Diego Civic Theatre, the regional music band Intocable will perform. The Mexican American regional Mexican band Fuerza Regida will perform at Viejas Arena. Nine: The Musical will open at Coronado Playhouse with performances continuing until mid-July.
Next Saturday and Sunday, the Ho'olaule'a Hawaiian Festival will take place at Liberty Station. The Scottish Highland Games will be held in Poway.
Next Saturday, the House of USA will host a special Romainian Cultural Program at the International Cottages. The 2nd Annual San Diego Lao Food Festival will take place at Mira Mesa Community Park. At the City Heights Performance Annex, Music en la Calle will feature Latin Jazz, Opera, Hip Hop, Japanese Drums, Opera de Tijuana, Music from West Africa, Mariachi, and more. There will be another Dastgah Jam (Persian music) at the Kensington-Normal Heights Library. The 3rd Annual Celebracion Mexicana will take place at USD's Shiley Theatre. There will be an Aria Gala at Irwin M. Jacobs Qualcomm Hall. At the Digital Gym the classic film Babette's Feast will be shown with a discussion afterward. The Cumbia bands Very Be Careful and Ritmos Tropicosmos will perform at The Casbah on Kettner. Linda Owlen & Espías Mexicanos, as well as Los Darth Vatos are slated to perform at Border X.
Local theatrical productions include Camelot at the North Coast Rep, Pásale Pásale at Bayfront Charter School, and Fat Ham at the Old Globe, and The Color Purple at the New Village Arts Theatre. Nine: The Musical opens next Friday at the Coronado Playhouse.
